Parenting Survey

We are often given surveys and asked to give our feedback to business and agencies. Filling out such anonymous surveys can allow us the safety to give feedback we might not otherwise be comfortable giving. This is what makes such surveys so valid and so necessary for organizations - to hear the truth. Now the big question: how often are we as parents completely honest with ourselves, as well? What if we had to fill out a survey on our own parenting? Could we be objective with ourselves and still love ourselves? Well, let’s give it a try. How about completing the survey below about yourself? You don’t have to turn it in to anybody but yourself. Remember that we improve ourselves only after facing the truth upfront. The number one benefit of risking the truth with ourselves is that we become better for our children!

Always

Most of the time

Sometimes When I can Never
1. I clearly communicate my needs to my child. 1 2 3 4 5
2. I tune into my child’s emotional needs. 1 2 3 4 5
3. I give my child the physical affection he/she needs. 1 2 3 4 5
4. I work with my child to solve difficult issues at home. 1 2 3 4 5
5. I control my temper when angry with my child. 1 2 3 4 5
6. I am consistent in limit setting and discipline. 1 2 3 4 5
7. I follow through with my child. 1 2 3 4 5
8. I respond in a productive manner to sibling rivalry. 1 2 3 4 5
9. I actively build my child's self-image and confidence level. 1 2 3 4 5
10. I take responsibility for my own mistakes and apologize. 1 2 3 4 5
11. I avoid giving my child silent "don't" messages
(ex.: Don't bother me; Don't talk so much).
1 2 3 4 5
12. I take responsibility to reduce the stress level in my home
in order to make it a peaceful place.
1 2 3 4 5
13. I teach my child to respond out of love, not out of fear. 1 2 3 4 5
14. I support my child through difficult social situations. 1 2 3 4 5
15. I tell my child "I love you" each and every day. 1 2 3 4 5

Now the truth serum: If your child had, the opportunity (and the cognitive and emotional maturity) to answer these questions about you as his/her parent, would the answers correlate?

Celebrate your strengths and give yourself credit for doing the world's hardest job - parenting. Reflect on your weaknesses and commit to making improvements for yourself and for your child.

"We must do that which we think we cannot do." Eleanor Roosevelt
